Pro Poker Player, Baseball Scout Charged In Illegal Gambling Probe
More than 24 people were charged November 15 in connection with an illegal gambling ring that made more than a billion dollars a year. Included in those charged are a former professional baseball scout and a high-stakes poker player.
The illegal betting operation was coursed through the site Playwithal.com, run by poker player James Giordano, said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Last year, there was a break in the case when New York Police Department investigators covertly hacked Giordano's laptop computer which he left in a hotel room while he attended a wedding. After getting the information from the laptop that he never lets out of his sight, Giordano was arrested early Wednesday by FBI agents.
Frank Falzarano, a former scout for the Washington Nationals and the San Francisco Giants was also arrested. Falzarano was allegedly the biggest earner in the gambling network.
"This is the largest illegal gambling operation we have ever encountered," said Kelly at a news conference. "It rivals casinos for the amount of betting."
Overall, 27 people coming from New York, New Jersey, Florida and Nevada were charged. They were charged with enterprise corruption, money laundering, promoting gambling and other counts.
